First gay Jewish marriage in Netherlands

RNW, 17 January 2011

On Sunday, the first ever gay Jewish marriage in the Netherlands was concluded in the synagogue of the Liberale Joodse Gemeente (Liberal Jewish Community) in Amsterdam.

As of this week, same-sex couples can get married in ten of the community's synagogues, in practically the same ceremony used for heterosexual couples. The Amsterdam ceremony was not a global first. In the United States, Jewish same-sex couples have been able to get married for some time. In Israel however, same-sex marriages are still illegal.
