Former Radio Netherlands Worldwide journalist and Africa representative Soulé Issiaka has been knighted. At a ceremony in the Dutch embassy in Cotonou, the capital of Benin, Soulé received the decorations which go with the title of Knight of the Order of Orange Nassau.
Soulé Issiaka retired last year, after a thirty-year career with RNW. The ambassador praised him for the work he had done for RNW, but also for promoting the Netherlands in Africa, and for his work towards press freedom and media pluralism on the continent. The Dutch diplomat said in his speech, "Soulé's professionalism stands out as an example for the young generation of journalists."
According to Editor-in-Chief Rik Rensen of Radio Netherlands Worldwide, Soulé Issiaka is the spiritual father of a very special concept, "a manner of working which does justice to the mission and vision of an international broadcaster: locally producing a weekly programme which is tuned to the needs of our target groups that we want to reach in Africa. The programme, Rencontre et Profils, is going out via 500 partner stations. Everyone who matters in Africa is familiar with it."
