KHARTOUM, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council (UNSC) on Sunday condemned what it considered escalatory military operations undertaken by the Sudanese Armed Forces which have taken control of the country's disputed oil-rich area of Abyei.

In a statement issued in Khartoum, the UNSC called on the Sudan government to halt its military operations and withdraw immediately from Abyei town and its environs.

"The members of the UNSC condemn the attack by southern forces against a UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) convoy escorting Sudanese armed forces elements of Joint Integrated Units on May 19 in Abyei. The attack was not only a serious breach of the agreements between the parties, but also a criminal act against the UN mission and its personnel," the UNSC said in the statement.
