TUNIS, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia is ready to recognize Libya' s National Transitional Council (NTC), reported Radio Mosaique on Wednesday, citing a statement by the government spokesman Taieb Baccouche on Tuesday.

"Should the NTC express the request, Tunisia is predisposed to recognize the council," Baccouche said, adding that early in the conflict, Tunisia was forced to observe a strict neutrality in the conflict due to the neighborly relations and the number of refugees entering Tunisia.

Baccouche also slammed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's massive bombardment of Libyan cities, saying that the Libyan leader lost " all legitimacy" in the process.

He also termed the shelling of Tunisian territory by pro- Gaddafi loyalists "unacceptable." According to Tunisian radio, between five to 10 rockets fired by forces loyal to Gaddafi landed near the Dhehiba border post on Tuesday, immediately after a Tunisian F-5 military planes and a helicopter patrolled the border.

The Tunisian army also deployed a large military contingent and equipment near the border, said Radio Mosaique.

Following a weekend lull, thousands of Libyan refugees crossed into Tunisia on Tuesday morning. The Dhehiba-Wazen border crossing has been the subject of fierce fighting between forces loyal to Gaddafi and Libyan rebels in the past weeks.
