Syrian opposition launches National Council
|
BEIJING,Aug
24 (Xinhuanet) – Syrian opposition groups meeting in Istanbul have announced
the formation of the Syrian National Council. The council's aim is to create
the political infrastructure to fill a potential power vacuum if Syrian
President Bashar Al-Assad were to depart.
The Syrian
President Bashar al-Assad has signed a new local administration law. His party
claims this law will decentralize authority, concentrating more power and
responsibilities in the hands of the public. This law is the second announced
in the last 24 hours.
On Monday,
the president issued a decree which should lead to the formation of a
multi-party committee. These measures are aimed to meet the demands of
anti-government protesters for broader freedom and democracy in the country.
However, on
the same day these measures of appeasement were announced, activists reported
at least seven more people killed by government forces in the central Syrian
city of Homs.
