RAMALLAH/GAZA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Palestinians demonstrated Sunday in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in support of hunger-striking prisoners in Israeli jails.

Around 6,000 Palestinian and Arab prisoners in all Israeli jails started Wednesday an open-ended hunger strike in protest to restrictions imposed on their daily life by the Israeli Prisons Authorities.

In the West Bank city of Ramallah, hundreds of Palestinians rallied at al-Manara Square waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans that called for the immediate release of the prisoners.

"The question of the prisoners in Israeli jails must be a central question that must be linked to reaching any permanent peaceful settlement reached in the future," said one of the demonstrators.

Similar demonstrations also were held in the northern West Bank cities of Tulkarem and Jenin in support for the prisoners and their hunger strike. They called for the release of the prisoners.

Dozens of prisoners' families demonstrated before Gelbowa' Jail in the northern West Bank. The demonstration was organized by Al- Mu'taqal (prisoner) Association and the Palestinian Committee to defend the prisoners.

They signed on a petition addressed to United Nations Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon urging him to put Israel's prisons under the supervision of the UN Human Rights organizations and send a UN mission to check prisons.

In the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, dozens of prisoners relatives demonstrated before the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza City to condemn the Israeli measures of restrictions on the prisoners.

Qadoura Fares, chairman of the Palestinian Prisoners Club in the West Bank, told reporters that around 20 prisoners in the Israeli prison of Ashkelon in southern Israel joined Sunday the hunger strike.

"The hunger striking prisoners on Wednesday and on Thursday refused their meals and refused to wear the prisons uniform. The hunger strike is a warning message to Israel until their demands are met," said Fares.

The prisoners want the Israeli prisons authorities to improve their living conditions, increase the hours of watching the satellite televisions and allow their families to visit them on weekly bases instead of once a month.
