Syrian guard

The
Netherlands wants to encourage Syrian soldiers, government officials and others
to defect and distance themselves from the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Foreign
Minister Uri Rosenthal said the European Union could help and protect deserters
and other defectors.
The
minister made his statement following Saturday’s talks with his EU colleagues
in Copenhagen. Mr Rosenthal said the other ministers supported his
proposal.
The Dutch foreign
minister said he was thinking of soldiers, police officers and other security
personnel, but also government officials, diplomats and businessmen with close
ties to the regime.
